Brent Council Parks Service has a legal duty to consult on the proposed dog control orders before they are introduced. The formal consultation runs from Monday, 28 March 2011 until Friday, 29 April 2011. If you would like to comment on the dog control orders proposed, this should be made no later than Friday, 29 April 2011. Please complete the short online questionnaire.
The majority of parks and open spaces will have no change to the current measures in place. Generally, the changes will be to:
- introduce greater control of dogs in more sensitive areas namely sports areas, some of our smaller/pocket parks, and three areas of high amenity value;
- limit the number of dogs walked by any one person to six;
- exclude dogs from all children’s playgrounds, bowling greens and tennis court.

For Gladstone Park, the restrictions, should they come into force, will apply to the Walled garden area as well as the bowling green and tennis courts areas near the Stables.
Sarah Hawken, Sports Development Manager at Brent Council, wrote to us recently about the sports facilities in the park. I’ve updated the Sports Facilities page and linked to them from the menu.
The GPCC will hold an open meeting on the 19th March.

Full details posted soon.
The subject of resurfacing the remaining Tennis courts adjacent to Dollis Hill Lane has been discussed at regular GPCC meetings in the past. Brent Council propose to do just that. The renewal will incorporate four new Junior Courts along with three new full size Courts.

In a quiet corner of Gladstone Park is a moving a memorial to the Holocaust.
“The bound figures writhe in permanent agony, a testimony to the horror of horrors” writes Julian Kossoff in The Telegraph. “Its random setting amid the daffodils and wooden benches of the suburban parkland, where mums come to push their prams and joggers work off the stress of city life, throws a contemporary light against the darkness of history.”
“Each year on 27 January the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). HMD has been held in the UK since 2001 and the United Nations declared this an International event in November 2005. … HMD is about remembering the victims and those whose lives have been changed beyond recognition of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and the ongoing atrocities today in Darfur. HMD provides us with an opportunity to honour the survivors but it’s also a chance to look to our own lives and communities today. Genocide doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a gradual process which begins when the differences between us are not celebrated but used as a reason to exclude or marginalise. By learning from the lessons ofthe past, we can create a safer, better future.”

A big turnout in Gladstone Park saw Norah plant a tree to commemorate her 90th birthday on 14 February 2011.
You can read Norah’s message of thanks and see more pictures on the NorthWestTwo website.
Brent Council has been awarded £4,000 to plant around 30 plain trees in Gladstone Park as part of the LEAF London campaign. LEAF London is a partnership campaign by the Mayor of London to protect the capital’s trees and encourage individual Londoners, businesses and organisations to plant more trees in the capital. The Mayor also wants to protect London’s woodlands and associated wildlife, and make London a greener, more attractive city.
As part of this programme, Brent Council would like to invite between 10-12 volunteers from the NorthWestTWO Residents Association, the Gladstone Park Consultative Committee & other local groups to a tree planting morning on Saturday 5 February 2011 commencing at Fort Gladstone (children’s playground over the bridge) at 10:30am, finish by 1 pm to help the Parks staff. There is a restriction on the number of volunteers and we would really like some children to participate, so email NorthWestTwo if you would like to help so that we can confirm back to you. Equipment and light refreshments will be provided albeit we suggest you bring weather appropriate clothing in particular footwear.
