Brent Dog Control Order Consultation

Brent Council Parks Service has a legal duty to consult on the proposed dog control orders before they are introduced. The formal consultation runs from Monday, 28 March 2011 until Friday, 29 April 2011. If you would like to comment on the dog control orders proposed, this should be made no later than Friday, 29 April 2011. Please complete the short online questionnaire.

The majority of parks and open spaces will have no change to the current measures in place. Generally, the changes will be to:

  • introduce greater control of dogs in more sensitive areas namely sports areas, some of our smaller/pocket parks, and three areas of high amenity value;
  • limit the number of dogs walked by any one person to six;
  • exclude dogs from all children’s playgrounds, bowling greens and tennis court.

For Gladstone Park, the restrictions, should they come into force, will apply to the Walled garden area as well as the bowling green and tennis courts areas near the Stables.

Octavia development on Thames Water site

Octavia Housing propose to develop the Thames Water site at the south side of the park.

Octavia development site plan

On the 10th of Feb, Octavia held a meeting with GPCC and NW2 at Cricklewood Homeless Centre. Octavia brought their architect and landscape architect.

Here are some notes from the meeting.

The site is part of the large Thames Water site, accessed via St Michael’s Road. Having been declared surplus to operational requirements it was recently sold to Octavia Housing. It measures approximately 1ha, and is bounded by Gladstone Park and the Council’s Park Depot to the west, the railway line to the north, Thames Water operational land to the east, and Olive Road to the south. It currently houses three large sheds and several portacabins which comprise office and storage facilities for sub-contracting companies to Thames Water together with extensive areas of hard standings and surface car parking. Vehicular and pedestrian access is via a service road off St Michael’s Road with a further pedestrian entrance via Olive Road / Oman Road, adjacent to an entrance into Gladstone Park.

Proposal.
The scheme is currently being designed to accommodate predominantly single family houses for private sale, approximately 23, with 2 flatted buildings of approximately 8 flats per buildings. There will also be some flats allocated for shared ownership and some will have provision for wheelchair access for supported living. The low density of the site is due to the restrictions of the water pumping station, the reservoir and underground pipes. There are plans to improve the aspect of the entry drive on St. Michael’s Road and landscape the area.

The following points were discussed

1. Traffic to the area. Octavia claim a reduction in traffic movements. This is based on distinguishing between local traffic movements by residents from the Thames Water / Mouchel traffic and general through traffic.

2. Parking is proposed at a ratio of 1:1. Properties will not be allocated street parking privileges by the council.

3. Though the buildings are likely to be more attractive than the current mix of properties and tarmac, they are likely to be taller (3 stories?) and overlook the park.

Holocaust Memorial Day

In a quiet corner of Gladstone Park is a moving a memorial to the Holocaust.

“The bound figures writhe in permanent agony, a testimony to the horror of horrors” writes Julian Kossoff in The Telegraph. “Its random setting amid the daffodils and wooden benches of the suburban parkland, where mums come to push their prams and joggers work off the stress of city life, throws a contemporary light against the darkness of history.”

“Each year on 27 January the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). HMD has been held in the UK since 2001 and the United Nations declared this an International event in November 2005. … HMD is about remembering the victims and those whose lives have been changed beyond recognition of the HolocaustNazi persecution and subsequent genocides in CambodiaRwandaBosnia and the ongoing atrocities today in Darfur. HMD provides us with an opportunity to honour the survivors but it’s also a chance to look to our own lives and communities today. Genocide doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a gradual process which begins when the differences between us are not celebrated but used as a reason to exclude or marginalise. By learning from the lessons ofthe past, we can create a safer, better future.”

LEAF London Tree Planting

Brent Council has been awarded £4,000 to plant around 30 plain trees in Gladstone Park as part of the LEAF London campaign. LEAF London is a partnership campaign by the Mayor of London to protect the capital’s trees and encourage individual Londoners, businesses and organisations to plant more trees in the capital. The Mayor also wants to protect London’s woodlands and associated wildlife, and make London a greener, more attractive city.

As part of this programme, Brent Council would like to invite between 10-12 volunteers from the NorthWestTWO Residents Association, the Gladstone Park Consultative Committee & other local groups to a tree planting morning on Saturday 5 February 2011 commencing at Fort Gladstone (children’s playground over the bridge) at 10:30am, finish by 1 pm to help the Parks staff. There is a restriction on the number of volunteers and we would really like some children to participate, so email NorthWestTwo if you would like to help so that we can confirm back to you. Equipment and light refreshments will be provided albeit we suggest you bring weather appropriate clothing in particular footwear.
